What to Expect during Worship

Welcome home! It’s sometimes awkward to walk into a new church for the first time. At St. John Chrysostom Episcopal Church, all who enter are welcome.

Our printed bulletins and worship booklets will guide you through the services which draw from The Book of Common Prayer, the Episcopal Hymnal and supplemental praise music – all of which can be found in each pew.

Do I sit, stand or kneel? While you may notice some people standing and some kneeling during parts of the service, a few guidelines may help. We stand when singing, affirming our faith (the Nicene Creed), and during the reading of the Gospel. We sit during the other readings from the Bible, the sermon, the announcements and the choir anthem. Kneeling or standing is acceptable during prayers. Please do what you are able, and be comfortable.

Each service begins by listening to scripture readings, reflecting the meaning in our lives, prayer, confession and forgiveness. We then gather around God’s table, accepting new life through the Holy Eucharist before returning to the outside world to continue God’s work. The Episcopal Church practices open communion. All baptized Christians are welcome to receive the bread and/or wine. You need not be an Episcopalian to participate.

We are happy to answer any questions you may have. You are welcome here!
